EDITORIAL: Remember, give thanks to veterans

Fergus Falls Daily Journal - 11/12/2018

Nov. 10--As community members get out of bed on Sunday, pour themselves coffee, take a warm shower, make breakfast for the family, and leave home for the day, remember the men and women that have fought for this country and allowed many of those freedoms that we take for granted.

This particular Veterans Day carries more weight as it commemorates 100 years the holiday has been celebrated. Known originally as Armistice Day, the first celebration was a year after the armistice between Germany and the Allied Nations came into effect on Nov. 11, 1918, after World War I. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory."

In 1938, an act was approved that made Nov. 11 of each year a legal holiday. After both World War II and the Korean War, veterans service organizations urged Congress to change "Armistice" to "Veterans." Congress would approve the change in 1954 to honor all American veterans, wherever and whenever they served.

In Otter Tail County and the surrounding area, we have several soldiers in our community that deserve a "thank you" for their time defending our country. We at The Daily Journal would like to thank all our veterans, past and present, for their service and defending our freedom.
