American flags on veterans' graves found shredded in Pa. cemetery

Patriot-News - 8/24/2018

Aug. 24--Friends and family looking to pay their respects this week to fallen veterans at a cemetery in eastern Pennsylvania were shocked to find the American flags decorating the graves of our country's heroes lying in tatters on the hallowed ground.

As NBC-10 reports, those shredded flags were found Wednesday at the Hatboro Cemetery in Montgomery County. And ever since, the loved ones of veterans, along with the wider community, have been demanding answers.

Yet the cause could be simple carelessness, as NBC-10 reports:

After numerous American flags decorating the graves of veterans were found mangled and shredded, the blame has been placed on a landscaping company responsible for maintaining the burial ground.

NBC-10 reports that the landscaping company, Brightview Landscaping, which was contracted by the Hatboro Cemetery, has been fired in wake of all those shredded flags, which appear to have been run over by lawn mowers.

"Even though it's not a military cemetery, per say, a lot of veterans are in this cemetery," cemetery official Wayne Sands told NBC-10.

Meanwhile, Furman Miles, with Brightview Landscaping, told NBC-10, "We're gathering information and we are going to formulate a response for our customer and the community."

But veteran Dan Covolesky of Gilbertsville, Pa., told NBC-10 he and others would take matters into their own hands to make things right for the fallen heroes:

"My brothers that are no longer with me, my brothers and sisters that no longer with me, brothers and sisters who sacrificed, honor their memories and make them proud that they didn't fight and die for nothing."
