Wrestling exhibition benefiting local veterans to feature former WWE champs

The Eagle - 2/22/2018

Lions Pride Sports is bringing an exhibition that features a former WWE wrestling champion to the Brazos County Expo on Friday to raise funds for Friends of Brazos Valley Heroes, a charity that helps local veterans in need.

The event, which will feature the WWE's Carlito and Lance Hoyt, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Others on the bill include Mike Dell, Alexander Hammerstone, Keith Lee, Vordell Walker and others. The event is sponsored by Lions Pride Sports, a company created by former wrestler Houston Carson. Lions Pride Sports was created after Carson was forced to quit wrestling because of a medical issue.

"Wrestling is kind of all that I knew," Carson said. "I'd done it for a decade, so I decided to start this company because I knew how professional wrestling works. We're kind of like the traveling circus, and what I wanted to do was bring something into Brazos Valley that's never been here. I also wanted to raise awareness for our local charities and schools and organizations."

Carson and Lions Pride Sports is raising that awareness with this event by teaming up with Friends of Brazos Valley Heroes, Inc., a charity that helps local veterans and heroes in need by fundraising and using those funds to help on a case-by-case basis.

"I think it's gonna be a packed show," Carson said. "It's gonna be a great night because of these WWE superstars coming, which is a really big deal for this area, because we don't get superstars like that here a lot."

Carson and Lions Pride Sports are excited to team up with Friends of Brazos Valley Heroes for the event. Helping with the cause is what makes the event all the more important for the wrestlers, Carson said.

"We support military 100 percent," Carson said. "We live in a free country because of our military, and as soon as they reached out and I found out I could help something local that was helping military, I was all on board."

Carson said this event is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages, and it should be an engaging form of entertainment for everyone.

"It's just a fun, family-friendly event," Carson said. "Wrestling is so cool, because you go to a show, and you get six matches each show. Every match has two different characters in it, telling a different story, so it's a bunch of mini movies in one night. Wrestling's neat because you can make almost anything work, and almost anything is possible."

Tickets start are $10-$40. For more information on the show and purchasing tickets, visit http://bit.ly/lionspridesports.
