Veteran organizes crawfish boil

Victoria Advocate - 3/10/2017

March 10--A Victoria veteran is organizing a Veterans Crawfish Boil at Saxet Lake that will be free for military veterans and families.

"I wanted to bring a bunch of vets together so they can have a good time," said McLean Raybon, 31. "I wanted to involve their families as well."

Originally from Edna, Raybon moved to Victoria after serving in the U.S. Army.

He's hoping the crawfish boil April 1 will grow into a big annual event.

The crawfish boil starts at 3 p.m. and runs until dark.

Raybon is selling raffle tickets to cover the cost of food, equipment and a bounce house rental.

"If we raise more money, we'll put it toward next year's setup," he said.

The response from the community has been positive, he said, with many donating toward the 25 raffle prizes.

O-FISH-all Business, a group of charitable outfitters and clothing brand, is helping spread the word and donated raffle prizes.

Warrior's Weekend also donated raffle prizes.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or 7 for $20. Tickets may be purchased by calling 361-571-0508.

"My hope for this is to bring all the veterans together," he said.

The event is free for all military veterans from all branches and eras and their families.

"It's always nice for people to go to something where you don't have to worry about money," he said. "I want it to be a worry-free kind of day. Bring your fishing poles if you want."
