Gowan Milling Co. gives holiday donation to Yuma Veterans Fund

Sun - 12/26/2016

Gowan Milling Co. presented a $5,000 donation Wednesday to the Arizona Community Foundation of Yuma for the Yuma Veterans Fund, one of two cash gifts given by the company for the holiday season.

The presentation was done at the company's site off state Highway 95 north of Yuma, with representatives of the foundation accepting a symbolic check from plant manager Curtis Priest, who said the grants began a few years ago in lieu of gifts given to regular customers.

He said the donation was being made on behalf of Gowan Milling customers, and said, "We decided a few years ago instead that we'd keep the money in the community, so now we send them a Christmas card to tell them where the money's going."

Veronica Shorr, regional director for Arizona Community Foundation of Yuma, said the donation is further proof that "for us, the military isn't just those people stationed on the base (Marine Corps Air Station-Yuma), but they're also part of our community."

Gowan Milling, a subsidiary of the Yuma-based Gowan Company, manufactures powered agricultural chemicals, including herbicides. The company also made a $5,000 donation to Arizona'sChildren Association. The nonprofits were the top vote-getters among employees who were asked to choose where the company's year-end donations should go.

The Yuma Veterans Fund, established by what was then the Yuma Community Foundation in 2012, is an endowment fund created to make grants to local organizations who help meet the needs of veterans which can't be met through government benefits.
